STORIES FROM THE WEDDING SEASON
December 23, 2024

The holiday season is engagement season! As many couples celebrate saying “yes,” we’d like to share some lessons learned from past wedding seasons. In 2024, 1899 Weddings and Events had the honor of hosting many beautiful weddings, witnessing families and couples start their journeys together. We’ve helped bring unique visions to life—even when no planner was involved!

What makes 1899 unique? Unlike many venues, we don’t require couples to work with specific vendors. While we offer guidelines based on experience, you’re free to choose your vendors, décor, and catering. This freedom allows you to express your creativity but can sometimes lead to challenges, such as unreliable vendors or logistical hiccups. For many couples, planning a wedding is the largest, most complex event they’ll ever coordinate, and it can be overwhelming.

To help alleviate the stress of planning and ensure you enjoy your big day, we’ve compiled some practical advice:

Plan Your Budget First

Before signing any contracts, know your total budget and allocate it to specific categories.

  • Set your “non-negotiable” limit for the overall spend. Venues with required catering packages might start at $5,000 or go as high as $25,000—be prepared.
  • Break down expenses: food, beverages, décor, transportation, attire, entertainment, photography, videography, and more. There are many costly options, so prioritize what’s important to you.

Be Flexible with Dates

Your dream date might already be booked at your favorite venue. Flexibility—shifting to a Friday, Sunday, or another weekend—can prevent heartache and open new options.

Secure Your Venue Early

Once you’ve chosen your venue and date, lock it in by signing the contract and paying the deposit.

Prioritize What Matters Most

Decide where to allocate your budget based on your vision. Do you want stunning floral arrangements? A foodie-focused menu? A vibrant party with top-tier drinks? Or a small, intimate celebration? Let your priorities guide your spending.

Be Honest with Vendors

When interviewing vendors, let them know you’re exploring options and provide a timeline for your decision. This approach reduces pressure and sets clear expectations.

  • Always ask for references and review their previous work on social media.
  • Speak to former clients and ask what they loved—and what they would change.

Don’t Skimp on Entertainment

Once the ceremony ends, the DJ sets the tone for the rest of your event. Disappointment often stems from poor entertainment choices, so invest in a high-quality DJ.

  • Ask the venue for recommendations.
  • Inquire about discounts for upfront payment or service bundles (e.g., DJ + photo booth).

Get Event Insurance

Event and cancellation insurance can protect you from financial loss due to unforeseen issues like venue damage, weather events, or illness. It’s an affordable safeguard for your investment.

Consider a Day-of Coordinator

A coordinator can streamline your day, provide vendor recommendations, and even secure better pricing due to their industry connections. They’re invaluable in navigating unexpected challenges and ensuring everything runs smoothly.

With thoughtful planning and vendor selection, you can minimize stress and focus on the joy of your day. Remember, your wedding is the first chapter of a lifetime together—a day to celebrate love and build a foundation for the future.
